Bogotá officials warn against feeding pigeons in public squares

The Bogotá Mayor's Office has issued a warning against feeding pigeons in public squares and parks, stating that while the practice may seem harmless, it can harm bird health and urban ecosystems.

Experts from the District Institute for Animal Protection and Welfare (IDPYBA) explain that offering inadequate foods like bread, rice, or various residues alters natural feeding habits and can lead to the proliferation of diseases. Veterinarians warn that cooked or reheated foods can compact in a bird's crop, potentially causing illness or death.

Furthermore, the concentration of birds in specific areas for feeding encourages increased competition and territoriality, which negatively impacts their social behavior and overall well-being. Officials encourage citizens to respect the natural diet of these birds, which consists of seeds and insects found in the city's vegetation.
