Bogotá ramps up safety measures after alleged TransMilenio sexual assault

Councilwoman María Clara Name demanded concrete results from the mayor's office, Bogotá police and the prosecutor’s office after an 18‑year‑old woman was allegedly robbed and sexually assaulted by two armed men near a TransMilenio station. She highlighted that the Metropolitan Police have recorded over 1,000 sexual‑violence cases in 2026, averaging nine women per day, and called for stronger security in transit stations, especially at night.

The District Women’s Secretariat reported that it has handled 58 assistance cases related to transport‑related harassment in 2026, trained more than 20,000 TransMilenio drivers on the TM‑26 emergency code for suspected sexual assault, and conducted 28 outreach events at high‑traffic stations. A total of 1,007 psycho‑legal assistance sessions have been provided to women victims in public spaces. Authorities urge the public to use the Purple Line hotline and emergency number 123 to report incidents.

These combined actions aim to improve protection for women using Bogotá’s public transport system and to deter future assaults.
