Bogotá residents raise concerns over potential arrival of Gustavo Petro
Residents of the Sierras del Moral residential complex in northern Bogotá have expressed concerns regarding the potential arrival of former president Gustavo Petro as a resident. In a signed communication, a group of neighbors requested that the administration and any potential landlords or intermediaries conduct a thorough legal evaluation before finalizing any lease or sale agreements.
The primary concern cited by the residents is Petro’s inclusion on the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) list of Specially Designated Nationals. While the residents clarified that being on the OFAC list does not constitute a criminal conviction or a general prohibition against renting property in Colombia, they described the situation as a “relevant warning signal” that requires specialized legal counsel to assess risks to the community, security, and common areas.
The residents emphasized that they do not have documentation confirming an active negotiation or contract, and their statement does not represent the entire community or the complex's administration. Meanwhile, Gustavo Bolívar has publicly defended Petro, asserting his fundamental right to reside where he chooses and noting the irony that the complex previously housed former president Iván Duque.
