Bogotá seminar addresses climate justice and indigenous rights

An international seminar on climate justice and Amazonian peoples was held on September 15 and 16 at the National University of Colombia in Bogotá. The event brought together indigenous leaders, researchers, and civil society representatives from Brazil, Colombia, and Peru to discuss human rights, climate financing, and indigenous governance.

Organized by several entities including Caritas Colombia, Caritas Peru, Caritas Brazil, and the Episcopal Commission for Social Action (CEAS), the seminar was part of the Sustainable Amazon: Resilient Communities program. Prior to the seminar, participants engaged in a five-day international exchange in the Guaviare department of Colombia, visiting indigenous and peasant communities to observe agroecology and sustainable production projects. The exchange included representatives from Brazilian quilombola and indigenous groups, such as the Kaiowá and Guarani.

Flávio Vicente Machado of the Missionary Indigenous Council (Cimi) noted that the activity fostered solidarity and experience sharing between indigenous, peasant, and quilombola populations.
