Colombia's Treasury Ministry faces audit over 14,000 contracts
Colombia's Contraloría General detected that 14,414 public contracts were signed in a four‑week period, amounting to roughly 4.55 trillion Colombian pesos. The volume represents a 22.5 % rise compared with the same timeframe four years earlier. About 11,000 of those contracts were awarded through direct contracting, a procedure that does not require a public call, and were concentrated mainly in the Agencia Nacional de Tierras and the Ministry of Interior.
Citing budgetary, financial and contractual risks that could threaten fiscal sustainability, the Contraloría activated its constitutional warning function and dispatched a team of Judicial Police to the Ministry of Hacienda y Crédito Público to collect documentation and verify the legality of the contracts. The ministry confirmed the inspection and stated that officials were being attended in accordance with the audit.
The oversight aims to ensure transparency, evaluate the adequacy of public spending, and guard the nation’s fiscal health as the new administration inherits the contracting record from the previous government.
