Bogotá to regulate athletic races following resident protests
The Bogotá Mayor's Office is drafting a new resolution to regulate and redistribute the routes of athletic races across the city. This measure aims to mitigate traffic congestion and road closures that have sparked significant protests from residents in localities such as Usaquén and Teusaquillo.
Government Secretary Gustavo Quintero stated that the administration intends to order and plan the use of public roads to avoid the saturation of specific residential areas. Data from the Secretary of Government reveals that out of 26 athletic races held in Bogotá during 2025, approximately 16 were held in the same geographic zones using very similar routes. This concentration has led to repeated weekly closures, impacting local commerce, emergency vehicle access, and the daily mobility of residents.
The proposed regulation seeks to diversify the permitted venues and paths for mass sporting events, ensuring that competitions are spread across different points of the capital rather than repeatedly paralyzing the same main arteries.
