Bogotá's IDRD expands free sports programs and plans new coliseums

The Instituto Distrital de Recreación y Deporte (IDRD) in Bogotá rolled out a comprehensive portfolio of free physical‑activity programs across the city’s twenty districts for July 2026. The offerings target all age groups, from early‑childhood movement sessions and swimming schools to adolescent esports tournaments, university‑level sports, and fitness plans for seniors. The initiative aims to promote active lifestyles, reduce urban sedentarism and strengthen community ties.

In parallel, the IDRD announced that construction of minor coliseums at the El Salitre sports complex will begin before the end of 2026. Technical committees are finalising designs, landscape, structural and geotechnical studies, with a preliminary budget slated for August. The project follows directives from Mayor Carlos Fernando Galán to ensure efficient public spending and to enhance high‑performance training facilities for local athletes and para‑athletes.

Both the program expansion and the coliseum works are presented as part of Bogotá’s broader strategy to improve public recreation infrastructure and youth development through sport.
