Bohuslav Martinů: The legacy of a Czech-Moravian composer

Bohuslav Martinů, the influential Czech-Moravian composer, left a diverse musical legacy that blended avant-garde cosmopolitanism with deep roots in his national identity. His work spanned various styles, including French modernism and jazz-inflected experimentation.

One of his notable works, the orchestral suite ‘Fresky Piera della Francesca’, was inspired by the 15th-century Renaissance frescoes in the Basilica di San Francesco in Arezzo. Following a visit to the site in 1954, Martinů sought to capture the atmosphere of the paintings through neo-impressionist sound colors rather than mere description. The suite premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 1956, performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under Rafael Kubelík.

Another significant composition is his Sixth Symphony, ‘Fantaisies symphoniques’, composed between 1951 and 1953. Described by the composer as being ‘without form’, the work is characterized by a single principal four-note motif that recurs throughout the piece. Martinů passed away on August 28, 1959, in Liestal, Switzerland.
