Authorities in Boise, Idaho, have identified the man known for over 40 years as the ‘Unknown Wanderer.’ He has been identified as Dr. Mathew Francis Betkouski, an organic chemist who died by cyanide suicide in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on December 4, 1982.
Investigators from the Ada County Sheriff’s Office reopened the cold case in 2019. A breakthrough occurred when Detective Tim Cooper traced an engraved key found with the body to a residential street in Jacksonville, Florida. DNA comparison between a surviving brother in Los Angeles and material from the man’s wallet confirmed Betkouski’s identity.
Betkouski’s identity has raised new questions regarding the 1982 Tylenol poisonings in the Chicago area, which killed seven people via cyanide-laced capsules. While investigators noted they lack a ‘smoking gun’ to definitively name him as the killer, they highlighted several links, including his professional background in chemistry, his history of volatility, and comments he reportedly made regarding the introduction of poison into medication capsules. The Chicago Police Department is currently collaborating with Idaho authorities to investigate these potential connections.
