Bola Tinubu drug trafficking allegations debunked
Claims that the FBI has filed a new drug trafficking case against Nigerian President Bola Tinubu are false. The allegations stem from a declaration in an existing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit, Greenspan v. Executive Office for U.S. Attorneys, rather than a new criminal indictment.
The FOIA suit involves a request for historical records from the late 1980s and early 1990s. While the FBI cited law-enforcement exemptions to withhold certain records to protect individuals from retaliation, the bureau did not publicly name President Tinubu as being on any specific surveillance tape. Records indicate that in 1993, approximately $460,000 in an account linked to Tinubu was subject to civil forfeiture in a Chicago-based heroin investigation, which is distinct from a criminal conviction for drug trafficking.
The controversy has fueled political tension between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC). The ADC has challenged the APC to produce evidence of corruption regarding Atiku Abubakar, while responding to APC claims regarding Tinubu’s past legal associations in the United States.
