Boldog Mór observation tower in Pannonhalma to be demolished

The Boldog Mór observation tower in Pannonhalma, which was named Observation Tower of the Year two years ago, is scheduled for demolition due to severe structural decay. The tower has been closed to hikers since late September last year because it became a safety hazard.

According to Zsolt Bene of Kisalföldi Erdőgazdaság Zrt., the primary cause of the deterioration was inadequate rainwater drainage. This allowed water to stagnate on parts of the wooden structure, leading to rot despite regular maintenance. The tower, currently owned by the Pannonhalma Archabbey, was originally built by Kisalföldi Erdőgazdaság using timber from the Sokorói hills.

The Pannonhalma Archabbey intends to preserve the natural and touristic value of the region and has included the construction of a new, modern, and safe observation tower in its long-term plans. Design work is expected to begin soon, though the construction timeline will depend on available financial resources.
