Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz has launched the ‘Fronteras Seguras’ (Secure Borders) security plan to combat the expansion of transnational organized crime, particularly from Brazilian criminal factions. The strategy aims to address rising violence in border regions, which authorities attribute to a violent dispute between the Comando Vermelho and Primeiro Comando da Capital over cocaine trafficking routes. These groups have been linked to ten recent homicides in border zones.

The plan involves the permanent deployment of specialized police units and elite troops to critical areas, including Guayaramerín, Cobija, San Ignacio, and San Matías. Additionally, two new super-specialized police units will be established in Beni and Santa Cruz, with personnel receiving training from foreign instructors. To bolster security, approximately 900 police officers are being deployed to reinforce municipalities bordering Peru.

A key component of the initiative is increased binational cooperation, specifically through tactical intelligence sharing with the Brazilian Federal Police and coordinated operations to capture criminals crossing the borders. President Paz emphasized that strengthening these international relationships is essential for regional safety and economic stability.
