Bolivia and Brazil launch binational plan to combat border crime
Bolivia and Brazil have introduced the 'Fronteras Seguras' (Secure Borders) binational plan, aimed at strengthening cooperation and information exchange to combat organized crime along their shared border. While the initiative seeks to coordinate operations, Bolivian legislators have expressed mixed expectations regarding its ability to curb rising violence and drug trafficking.
In a related escalation of border violence, four Bolivian nationals were killed by Brazilian police in the Mato Grosso region. The incident occurred after the group attempted to flee in a light aircraft following an exchange of gunfire. Authorities identified one of the deceased, José Mariano Paz Chávez, as a suspect in a previous ambush in Ascensión de la Frontera. The Bolivian government has linked these violent activities to territorial disputes between the Brazilian criminal organizations Primer Comando de la Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV) over narcotics trafficking routes.
Separately, in Cochabamba, authorities are investigating the violent death of a woman found near the Laguna Alalay cycle path. Two suspects have been apprehended following a forensic investigation that identified the cause of death as hypovolemic shock resulting from a femoral artery laceration caused by a sharp weapon.
