Bolivia and Paraguay finalize border demarcation after 88 years
Bolivia and Paraguay have officially completed the demarcation of their shared international borders, concluding a diplomatic and technical process that has spanned 88 years. The final agreement was reached in La Paz following a three-day meeting of a joint commission.
The demarcation process was initiated following the Chaco War (1932–1935), a conflict over the Chaco Boreal region that resulted in an estimated 80,000 to 100,000 deaths and significant territorial shifts. The final pending segment, measuring approximately 3.5 kilometers along the Rio Negro (also known as the Otuquis River), was resolved using high-precision drones and official government data.
The total border length is approximately 742 to 755 kilometers, consisting of both terrestrial and fluvial sections. With this completion, Bolivia and Paraguay become the only two countries in South America to have their borders fully demarcated.
