Bolivia begins landmark biocidie trial for jucumari bear

A landmark criminal trial for biocidie has commenced in Chuquisaca, Bolivia, following the July 2023 death of a jucumari bear in the El Palmar Integrated Natural Management Area. The case marks the first judicial process in the country involving the death of a non-domestic wild animal.

The incident occurred in the Rumi Cancha community after the bear was accused of killing a cow. According to reports, the animal was pursued by armed individuals and dogs, tortured, and dismembered. Environmental activists and organizations, including the Senda Verde refuge, have noted that the conflict arose because livestock had entered the bear's natural habitat.

Three individuals, aged 22, 44, and 58, face charges. Activists are demanding the maximum penalty of five years to set a legal precedent for the protection of other vulnerable species, such as jaguars and condors. The judicial outcome is expected to significantly influence how environmental crimes and wildlife protection are handled in Bolivia.
