The Plural Justice Commission of the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies has approved a resolution to extend the country's current state of exception for an additional 90 days. The proposal, which must still pass the full Chamber and the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, aims to maintain public order and prevent potential social unrest and road blockades that have previously disrupted the economy and food supplies.

The current state of exception, which began on June 20, is set to expire on September 20. Supporters of the extension, including various legislators, argue the measure is necessary to ensure economic stability against threats of renewed protests from transport, peasant, and union sectors.

However, opposition leader Jorge Quiroga has criticized the move, warning that extending the state of exception will indefinitely delay critical constitutional reforms. Quiroga noted that under the Bolivian Constitution, reforms cannot be processed while a state of exception is in effect. He argued that the current measure has been more symbolic than operational and that the government should prioritize addressing issues of autonomy, justice, and investment through constitutional change rather than prolonging emergency measures.
