Bolivia debates new Mining Code and royalty distribution

Bolivia is currently debating the future of its mining sector through the development of a new Mining Code and discussions regarding the distribution of royalties. A central point of contention is whether mining revenues should benefit only the producing departments or be redistributed nationally, similar to the existing model for hydrocarbons.

The legislative process has faced significant criticism due to the alleged exclusion of indigenous communities from crucial discussions. Local leaders and environmental organizations argue that these groups, whose territories and river basins are often directly impacted by mining, have not been included in the negotiations.

Environmental concerns are also prominent, particularly regarding mercury contamination from gold mining in the Amazon region. While the government states the new code aims to eradicate illegal mining and promote sustainability, the lack of consensus among stakeholders and the omission of affected indigenous voices remain major points of tension.
