Bolivia President dismisses Economy Minister after legislative censure
Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz Pereira has dismissed Economy and Public Finance Minister José Gabriel Espinoza following a legislative censure by the Plurinational Legislative Assembly. The dismissal was formalized through Presidential Decree N° 5678, in compliance with Law 1350, which mandates the removal of a censured minister within 24 hours of formal notification.
The Assembly censured Espinoza on August 18 with 91 votes in favor and 34 against. The censure was prompted by Espinoza's failure to attend a scheduled parliamentary hearing regarding the country's economic crisis and allegations of irregularities concerning sovereign funds. The government has challenged the validity of the vote, arguing it did not meet the constitutional two-thirds threshold of 111 members.
Oscar Mario Justiniano Pinto, the current Minister of Sustainable Production, Environment, and Water, has been appointed as the interim Economy Minister. Justiniano will hold both portfolios until a permanent successor is named. The legal dispute over the censure is currently pending before the Constitutional Court, with a hearing scheduled for August 24 in El Alto.
