Bolivia evaluates strategic lithium industrialization
Bolivia is navigating the complex geopolitical and environmental implications of its lithium resources. As a critical component in batteries for mobile devices, computers, and electric vehicles, lithium represents a significant strategic asset for the country.
Since 2017, the state-owned company Yacimientos de Litio Bolivianos (YLB) has been mandated to develop and industrialize these evaporitic resources found in the country's salt flats. The discussion surrounding lithium development in Bolivia extends beyond simple industrialization versus conservation. It involves critical questions regarding environmental monitoring, technical transparency, risk assessment, and how local territories and economies will benefit from the technological demand.
