Bolivia ex‑deputy Laura Rojas stays detained in drug‑suitcase scandal

Ex‑deputy Laura Rojas continues to be held in preventive detention as the investigation into the “narcomaletas” case proceeds. The case concerns 31 suitcases allegedly flown from the United States on a private jet costing $100,000 and smuggled through Viru Viru airport in Santa Cruz using an annulled diplomatic passport.

Prosecutor General Roger Mariaca confirmed that all suspects remain detained while the probe, which includes cooperation with international authorities, is expected to finish its preparatory phase by November. No suitcases have been located, and authorities have not determined their contents.

Former deputy Amilcar Barral warned that the judicial process is slow and suggested that substitute measures could lead to Rojas’ release, though no evidence was presented. Police commander David Gómez said the investigation continues, and judge Hébert Zeballos’ earlier raid uncovered drugs but did not clarify the suitcases’ fate.
