Bolivia faces economic tension over energy tariff indexation and subsidy cuts
In Bolivia, political tensions are rising over government economic measures and potential subsidy removals. Former deputy Juan José Huanca has denounced Supreme Decree 5750, which indexes electricity tariffs to the U.S. dollar. Huanca argues this measure, aligned with International Monetary Fund (IMF) guidelines, will disproportionately impact low-income families and trigger inflation in essential services.
Additionally, deputy José Luis Porcel warned of a high probability that the government will eliminate subsidies for gasoline and diesel starting January 1, 2027, as part of the upcoming General State Budget. Porcel noted that the government is also evaluating a selective removal of subsidies for liquefied petroleum gas (GLP). To mitigate smuggling and control consumption, officials are considering a system of distribution cards for households.
