Bolivia faces LPG shortages and rising prices in La Paz and Oruro

Shortages of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and rising product prices are causing significant social and economic tension in Bolivia. In La Paz, families have organized street blockades at key locations, including Sucre Avenue and the Villa crossing, to protest the lack of gas cylinder distribution. Residents reported difficulty securing fuel for daily food preparation, with some attempting to access distribution points as early as 5:00 AM without success.

In Oruro, the situation is compounded by diesel shortages, which have disrupted the distribution of LPG cylinders, particularly affecting new residential areas without domestic gas connections. The Federation of Neighborhood Councils of Oruro (Fedjuve) is coordinating with distributors to establish fixed supply points and is working with Consumer Defense to address reports of market speculation and irregularities.

Beyond fuel, Oruro is experiencing rising costs for basic goods. Fedjuve is proposing weekly district fairs to mitigate the impact on family economies. Additionally, a parliamentary inspection of the Oruro Subsidy Distribution Agency revealed inventory shortages that threaten the regular delivery of subsidy packages to vulnerable families.
