Bolivia faces potential US visa restrictions amid corruption concerns
Former Chancellor Ronald MacLean has suggested that US visa restrictions targeting individuals linked to corruption and drug trafficking could extend to President Rodrigo Paz’s cabinet. MacLean noted that while he lacks official confirmation, the current trend of restrictions has already moved from the judiciary and parliament to other sectors.
Vice President Edmand Lara indicated that the government will request the US Department of State to clarify why certain names were omitted from recent lists of restricted individuals. Lara also commented on the status of Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo regarding his standing in the United States.
In a separate debate regarding judicial cooperation, former President Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé argued that the Bolivian justice system requires independence and impartiality rather than reliance on the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). This follows calls from Supreme Court President Romer Saucedo for increased coordination with the DEA and international organizations to combat organized crime and corruption.
