Bolivia government seeks to extend state of exception

The Bolivian government has approved a decree to extend the current state of exception for an additional 90 days, a move intended to address ongoing social unrest and threats of protests. The cabinet decision, announced by Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano, will be presented to the Legislative Assembly for approval.

President Rodrigo Paz originally declared the state of exception on June 20 following widespread road blockades that paralyzed much of the country for 53 days. The government seeks to maintain the measure while risk factors persist, including fuel shortages and a scarcity of US dollars, which have driven up prices.

The proposal faces political division. While some government officials and business groups argue the extension is necessary for security and to prevent further blockades, opposition lawmakers have criticized the move. Critics argue the government should address the underlying economic issues rather than relying on emergency measures, and some have called for an accountability report on the effectiveness of the current state of exception before any extension is granted.
