Bolivia implements diesel price hike for large consumers via Decree 5676
The Bolivian government has implemented Supreme Decree 5676, which partially removes diesel subsidies to reduce the state's fiscal burden and address the depletion of international reserves. Under the new regulation, diesel prices for large consumers (GRACOS), direct users, and corporate entities will rise from the subsidized rate of Bs 9.80 to a referential price of approximately Bs 18.00 per liter.
To mitigate social impact, the government has frozen diesel and gasoline prices for public transport and general consumers at the previous rate. However, the measure has sparked significant concern across various sectors. The National Poultry Association (ANA) warned that the price hike could increase production costs and incentivize black market speculation. In Tarija, agricultural workers have organized protests demanding the repeal of the decree, arguing that the threshold for becoming a 'large consumer' will unfairly penalize small-scale farmers.
The policy follows a period of intense social unrest and fuel shortages in the country. Officials state the adjustment is necessary to stabilize the finances of YPFB and manage the high costs of fuel imports.
