Bolivia inaugurates BSL-3 laboratory to enhance pathogen surveillance
Bolivia has inaugurated a new Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory at the National Institute of Health Laboratories (Inlasa). The facility, representing an investment of approximately $815,080 funded by the Inter-American Development Bank, is designed for the secure handling and containment of high-risk pathogens, including hantavirus, arenavirus, and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.
The laboratory will enhance the country's capacity for genomic surveillance, scientific research, and the development of vaccines and treatments while minimizing environmental risks. Health officials noted the facility is a significant milestone for national public health and epidemiological response.
In a separate health initiative, Bolivia is preparing for a cross-border vaccination campaign scheduled for August 25 to 31, 2026. This effort, part of the Andean Border Vaccination Week, aims to close immunization gaps for vulnerable populations, including indigenous communities and migrants, by prioritizing vaccines for measles and rubella through coordination with neighboring countries.
