Bolivia intervenes state oil company YPFB amid fuel crisis
The Bolivian government has ordered an extraordinary and temporary intervention of the state oil company, Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales Bolivianos (YPFB), via Supreme Decree 5697. The measure, which is set to last up to 180 days, aims to protect state interests and restore operational and administrative efficiency following severe fuel shortages and supply irregularities.
Alongside YPFB, the government has also intervened the National Hydrocarbons Agency (ANH) under Supreme Decree 5699 to address regulatory and oversight vulnerabilities. Jorge Luis Gumucio has been appointed as the interim executive director of the ANH to lead these transparency and control efforts.
As part of a broader strategic shift, the Ministry of Hydrocarbons announced plans to gradually withdraw YPFB from fuel commercialization. The government intends for the state company to focus on its core roles of exploration, exploitation, and refining, while progressively transferring import, distribution, and sales responsibilities to the private sector. This move follows recent diesel price increases intended to curb smuggling and addresses ongoing logistical challenges in the fuel supply chain.
