Bolivia’s Fiscalía General, acting through the Santa Cruz office, issued an arrest warrant for former president Evo Morales on 29 July 2026. The warrant, signed by anti‑corruption prosecutor Brayan Melgar, stems from a complaint filed by the Civic Committee Pro Santa Cruz and later endorsed by the Ministry of Government. It accuses Morales of terrorism, armed uprising, attacks on transport and public‑service security, criminal association and public incitement to crime.

The charges relate to the 53‑day road blockades that swept the country in May–June 2026, causing severe shortages of food, fuel and medicines, at least 16 deaths (13 due to lack of medical care) and economic losses estimated at over US$3 billion. President Rodrigo Paz declared a state of emergency on 20 June 2026, authorising the army to assist police in clearing the blockades.

Morales rejected the accusations, posting on X “No nos van a intimidar” (“They will not intimidate us”) and describing the prosecution as political persecution. A second arrest order was later issued, confirming the ongoing investigation into his alleged role in the protests.
