Bolivia marks 44 years of democracy amid calls for institutional stability

Bolivia marked the 44th anniversary of its return to democracy on October 10, 2026. During commemorations in San Borja, Beni, President Rodrigo Paz called for the defense of the democratic system, urging citizens to resolve political differences through institutions and dialogue rather than through violence, blockades, or physical confrontations.

President Paz highlighted the historical cost of democracy, referencing the 1980 military coup led by Luis García Meza against Lidia Gueiler Tejada. He also proposed a '50/50' resource distribution model and a federalist vision to empower regional governments and reduce administrative bottlenecks. He attributed current economic difficulties to a lack of investment and declining hydrocarbon reserves from previous administrations.

Political analysts and observers expressed varying concerns regarding the state of the nation. Some warned of a deepening institutional crisis, the rise of neopopulism, and the influence of illicit activities within the state. Others emphasized the need for renewed political leadership and the strengthening of democratic education and civic participation to prevent institutional regression.
