Bolivia probes missing 22 kilos of gold from Viru Viru airport seizure

Authorities in Bolivia seized 77 gold bars weighing about 189 kg at Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz, intended for Dubai. Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo said officials have identified roughly 22 kg that may have vanished during custody and that the matter is under investigation.

The gold belonged to a company based in La Paz, but customs officials flagged falsified documentation from the National Service of Registration and Control of Mineral and Metal Commercialization (Senarecom). The Special Force against Crime (FELCC) and the Ministry of Mining confirmed the irregularities. Prosecutors have detained a 22‑year‑old found with the suitcases and are seeking a 180‑day preventive detention. The cargo is valued at around 25 million USD, a figure that could rise with the extra gold.
