Bolivia protests spark arrests and road blockades, deepening shortages

Protests that began 42 days ago as a labour movement in Bolivia have escalated into nationwide demonstrations demanding the resignation of President Rodrigo Paz. Police forces responded with force in La Paz, detaining 36 people and leaving dozens injured after the Central Obrera Boliviana marched into the city centre.

The unrest has triggered more than 90 road blockades, disrupting the supply of essential goods and fuel. Prices for gasoline and diesel are reported to be up to five times the official rate, and shortages have pushed up the cost of basic food baskets. The government has prepared to invoke a state of exception under the newly‑passed Law 1740, which would broaden military and police powers to quell the protests.

Catholic Church leaders and the national ombudsman have called for a departmental pact to halt the violence and negotiate a political solution, warning that continued repression could further deepen the humanitarian and economic crisis.
