Bolivia records 36 femicides in 2026, latest victim discovered in Santa Cruz
Bolivian authorities have documented 36 femicide cases in 2026, with La Paz reporting the highest number (14) followed by Santa Cruz (7). The latest case involved a roughly 40‑year‑old woman whose body was found semi‑nude on June 2 in the Plan Tres Mil area of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. An autopsy determined death by mechanical asphyxiation and noted signs of sexual assault. Prosecutor Rose María Barrientos Ruiz confirmed fingerprint collection and requested identity verification from the national identification service (SEGIP). Santa Cruz prosecutor Alberto Zeballos announced a thorough investigation by the Public Ministry.
The growing tally underscores a severe and persistent problem of violence against women in Bolivia, frequently linked to domestic disputes, jealousy, alcohol use, or revenge. Officials stress the need for urgent action to protect women and ensure justice for the victims.
