Bolivia rice prices rise amid diesel shortages and high costs
Rice prices in Bolivia have reached between 500 and 600 Bolivianos per quintal for premium varieties, with even budget options seeing significant increases. Producers attribute the price hikes to rising production and logistics costs following the removal of diesel subsidies.
Ana Isabel Ortiz, former president of the National Federation of Rice Cooperatives of Bolivia (Fenca), noted that while production costs have risen, some urban market prices may reflect speculation. She emphasized that diesel is essential for planting, harvesting, and transporting goods, making the entire supply chain vulnerable to fuel price volatility.
In regions such as Caracollo, local authorities like Mayor Juan Carlos Pinaya warn that diesel scarcity and high costs are forcing farmers to reduce their planting areas. This reduction in cultivation poses a threat to future food security and agricultural planning.
