Bolivia road blockades cripple tourism and spur $2.5 bn recovery plan

Prolonged road blockades organised by the Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) and campesino groups have halted tourism in western Bolivia. After more than 44 days, the Ministry of Sustainable Tourism reports losses of about 1.1 billion bolivianos (≈ $110 million), with 65% of hotel reservations cancelled and occupancy falling to 18%.

The National Chamber of Industries (CNI) estimates total economic damage at $2.5 billion and warns of a possible 2.5% GDP contraction and 15% unemployment if the unrest continues. The CNI proposes a recovery package that includes a one‑time digital bonus of Bs 1,000 for 3.5 million affected citizens, a $2.5 billion recovery fund, tax deferrals, low‑interest credit lines and other measures aimed at preserving jobs and boosting domestic consumption.
