Bolivia road blockades inflict over 150 million bolivianos in road damage

More than 50 days of road blockades across Bolivia damaged 37 sections of the country's Fundamental Road Network. The Ministry of Public Works, led by Mauricio Zamora, reported that the destruction of signage, safety barriers, drainage works and asphalt surfaces caused an estimated total economic impact of 150.111.793 million bolivianos. Direct repair costs were estimated at 91.196.086 million bolivianos, toll‑revenue losses at 52.536.960 million bolivianos, and the complete loss of the Vilaque‑Cocapata toll station at 6.378.747 million bolivianos.

The most heavily affected regions were La Paz (about 46 million bolivianos in damages), Cochabamba (20 million) and Oruro (20 million). Police and military forces intervened on 20 June to clear the barricades, and 44 criminal complaints have been filed against protest leaders. The blockades also hampered routine road‑maintenance activities and limited fuel supplies needed for equipment, further delaying repairs.

The government’s technical assessments are ongoing, and the reported figures may rise as evaluations continue.
