Chilean judge halts destruction of seized Bolivian timber

A guarantee judge in Arica, Chile, has ordered a 60-day suspension on the destruction of seized Bolivian timber and authorized new independent expert analysis. The legal action follows accusations that the wood was impregnated with controlled substances, a claim that 23 affected Bolivian exporting companies and the Bolivian Institute of Foreign Trade (IBCE) dispute.

The dispute involves approximately 60 containers of wood. While some material has already been incinerated, the judicial order aims to preserve remaining cargo in ports such as Valparaíso and San Antonio. The IBCE reports that the situation has caused an estimated $50 million in economic damages and puts at least 20,000 jobs at risk.

Bolivian Senator Marcela Guerrero and Senator César Mentasti have called for compensation for the destroyed goods and suggested that Bolivia could pursue a claim against the Chilean state at the International Court of Justice due to the reputational damage to the national forestry industry.
