Bolivia sees 50% drop in construction material imports amid economic slowdown

Imports of construction materials to Bolivia fell by 50.8% over the past four years. In 2021 the country imported 674,240 tonnes worth US$545 million, while the most recent year saw only 345,537 tonnes at a value of US$272 million. Brazil supplied 35% of the imported goods, followed by China (27%) and Peru (23%).

Industry leaders say the decline reflects a broader slowdown in the construction sector. Raúl Solares, president of the Bolivian Chamber of Construction, cited the economic crisis, a shortage of foreign‑exchange, and rising construction costs as key drivers. Domestic producers fulfill less than 30% of national demand, leaving the market dependent on imports. Analysts warn the reduced imports could curb both public and private investment, lower job creation and delay or halt building projects.
