Bolivia government seeks to extend State of Exception for 90 days

The Bolivian government has announced plans to present a decree to the Plurinational Legislative Assembly to extend the current State of Exception for an additional 90 days. Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo stated that the move is supported by citizen consensus and has received backing from the Plural Justice Commission of the Chamber of Deputies.

The State of Exception was originally established on June 20, 2026, following widespread road blockades that caused significant economic disruption and at least 16 deaths. While the government seeks to maintain the measure to ensure economic reactivation and stability, the Ombudsman, Pedro Callisaya, has urged authorities to address the underlying social and economic demands of the population to prevent further conflict.

In a separate legislative context, analysts noted that the Assembly has approved 67 non-structural laws over the past 10 months, leading to criticisms regarding the lack of significant economic or institutional reforms.
