Bolivia weather strands 100 Italian tourists in mountains
Severe weather conditions in South America have left approximately one hundred Italian tourists stranded in the high mountains of Bolivia. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, via its Crisis Unit and the Embassy in La Paz, is monitoring the situation as seasonal storms cause disruptions.
These weather conditions have led to the closure or reduced operating hours of border crossings between Bolivia and Chile. Authorities have advised travelers to consider changing their itineraries and to prepare for potential delays in emergency rescue services.
In neighboring Peru, heavy rainfall has caused hydrogeological issues, including rising water levels and debris accumulation. Consequently, authorities in Cusco have extended the closure of several paths on the Inca Trail toward Machu Picchu until Saturday, August 22.
