Bolivian deputies and Mexican activists call for expanded criminal investigations

In Bolivia, the Special Integral Commission of the Chamber of Deputies has recommended that the State Attorney General's Office expand its investigation into the ‘maletas case’. The commission suggests investigating high-ranking officials from the National Customs, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), FELCN, and NAABOL to determine if there was criminal association or negligence regarding the handling of 31 suitcases that arrived at Viru Viru International Airport in November 2025.

The investigation seeks to clarify discrepancies in aircraft documentation, specifically a contradiction between the authorized operator, Southern Cross Aircraft LLC, and the operator identified in arrival documents, Proflite LLC. The commission aims to establish whether officials failed to observe these inconsistencies.

In Mexico, the organization Propuesta Cívica has called on federal authorities to investigate potential political-criminal networks involved in the murders of journalists in Veracruz during Javier Duarte’s administration (2010–2016). The group presented a plan to the FEADLE and FGR, proposing that collaboration between public servants and organized crime may have obstructed justice.

During that period, 18 journalists were killed and three disappeared, with an impunity rate of 31.8%. The proposal highlights specific cases, including journalists from the newspaper Notiver, to address the systemic failures in previous investigations.
