Bolivia-Brazil border violence claims 14 lives amid gang warfare

A violent conflict between criminal factions along the Bolivia-Brazil border has resulted in 14 deaths over one week. The violence is driven by a territorial dispute between the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV) to control drug trafficking routes, specifically around the San Matías region.

Following an ambush on Bolivian intelligence officers that left one agent dead, several suspects fled to Brazil in a small aircraft. After being intercepted by the Brazilian Air Force and making an emergency landing in Mato Grosso do Sul, the group hid in dense vegetation for several days. On Friday, a confrontation with the Special Police Operations Battalion (Bope) led to the deaths of four men, including José Mariano Paes (alias 'Piña'), identified by Bolivian authorities as a highly wanted criminal involved in the killing of the police officer.

In response to the escalating crime, the Bolivian government has announced an agreement with Brazil to establish Federal Police bases in several Bolivian border cities, including Cobija, Guayaramerín, San Matías, and Puerto Suárez, to curb organized crime.
