Bolivian environmentalists protest mining impacts

Environmental activists held protests in La Paz, Bolivia, against mining activities, with simultaneous demonstrations reported in Cochabamba, Sucre, and Tarija. The protesters expressed concerns regarding the environmental and health impacts of using substances such as mercury and cyanide.

Carmen Capriles, an activist and researcher with the collective Reacción Climática, stated that mining is turning parts of the country into “sacrifice zones” by contaminating water and wildlife. Protesters also questioned the economic benefits of the industry, noting that mining royalties account for only 2.7% of the revenue generated.
