Bolivia faces political tension as Evo Morales threatens protests
Bolivia is facing escalating political and social tensions as former President Evo Morales issues an ultimatum to the administration of Rodrigo Paz. Morales demands the repeal of economic decrees, specifically Supreme Decree 5716, which eliminates diesel subsidies, and Supreme Decree 5727, regarding the restructuring of public companies, by October 3. Failure to meet these demands has prompted threats of national mobilizations and road blockades starting October 13.
The government has responded firmly, with Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano stating that “no one is above the law” and noting that Morales faces active arrest warrants for various charges, including terrorism and instigation of public crime. President Paz has criticized Morales, labeling him the “worst president” and accusing him of seeking conflict rather than negotiation.
Other social sectors are also mobilizing. The Central Obrera Boliviana (COB) has instructed its affiliates to hold emergency assemblies to determine a formal stance against the government's economic measures. Additionally, the agricultural sector in Tarija has expressed concern over food emergencies and the potential shift to international gasoline prices, while the Catholic Church has called for dialogue to prevent further national division.
