Bolivia: Explosions at Viacha military base leave nine dead and trigger political tension
Explosions at the Regimiento Bolívar military installation in Viacha, Bolivia, have resulted in nine deaths and 84 injuries. While current investigations suggest the incident may have been caused by the mishandling of explosive materials, President Rodrigo Paz has requested that the Prosecutor's Office investigate the possibility of a deliberate attack against his government.
The Forensic Investigation Institute (IDIF) has recovered 48 bags containing human remains from the site and is calling on families of missing persons to provide genetic samples for identification. Five individuals remain missing following the double blast.
The incident has also triggered a political confrontation between the executive branch and the military. Vice President Edmand Lara engaged in a heated verbal altercation with Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Alvarado Peredo while demanding information regarding the search for missing persons. President Paz criticized Lara’s conduct as having a ‘dictatorial trait,’ while the military command and Defense Minister Ernesto Justiniano have expressed full support for the officer, stating he was performing his duties by securing the perimeter.
