Bolivian legislative leaders urge Edmand Lara to focus on new term

The presidents of the Bolivian Chamber of Deputies and the Senate have issued a joint statement urging Vice President Edmand Lara, acting as the presiding officer of the Plurinational Legislative Assembly, to focus on the inaugural session of the 2026-2027 legislature.

The dispute follows a contentious session where legislators rejected a rescheduling attempt by Lara. After Lara reportedly withdrew from a session due to a lack of quorum, the Senate President, Diego Ávila, assumed leadership. The legislative body subsequently voted by a two-thirds majority to reject the rescheduling and proceed with the session to approve pending resolutions.

Legislative leaders asserted that all agenda items for the 2025-2026 closing session had been fully addressed and could not be considered pending. Edmand Lara has called for an urgent meeting with chamber presidents and party leaders to resolve the institutional conflict before the new legislative term begins.
