Bolivian miners demand dismissal of Mining Minister over illegal mining rise

The Federation of Mining Workers of Bolivia (FSTMB) is demanding the dismissal of Mining Minister Marco Antonio Calderón, citing a failure to curb the rise of illegal mining and land encroachments.

FSTMB executive Andrés Paye reported that illegal activities have intensified since February, particularly in La Asunta. He criticized the Administrative Mining Jurisdictional Authority (AJAM) for its inability to exercise control in unregulated zones. Paye also alleged that foreign companies from China and Brazil are partnering with local cooperatives, claiming that in some instances, foreign miners receive 80% of the proceeds while local cooperatives receive only 20%.

The federation warned that illegal mining is linked to organized crime and causes significant environmental and economic damage. Miners have also reported facing violence and firearms when officials attempt to inspect certain areas. The FSTMB has proposed a new law to combat illegal mining, land grabbing, and ‘jukeo,’ and has vowed to continue protests until the government implements concrete measures.
