Bolivian officials and indigenous leader face death threats
Multiple high-profile figures in Bolivia are reporting death threats linked to their efforts against organized crime and environmental degradation. Minister of the Presidency, Fernando Aramayo, confirmed that several cabinet members have received various forms of intimidation, which he attributes to the government disrupting the interests of criminal organizations involved in drug trafficking.
President Rodrigo Paz has also reported threats against himself and his family, following recent operations against the Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and other criminal groups. The government has filed formal complaints with the Prosecutor's Office to address these attempts to undermine anti-corruption and anti-narcotics efforts.
In a separate but related context of intimidation, Javier Fernández Tuno, president of the Central Indígena de los Pueblos Originarios de la Amazonía de Pando (CIPOAP), reported receiving anonymous death threats against himself and his family. Fernández Tuno stated these threats are a response to his legal actions aimed at protecting the Madre de Dios River from gold mining pollution, which local communities claim threatens their health and water supply.
