Bolivian Police face scrutiny following Commander Mirko Sokol's resignation

The former commander of the Bolivian Police, Mirko Sokol, resigned from his position due to personal reasons and a perceived campaign of defamation, according to his lawyer, Abel Loma. Loma stated that Sokol chose to step down to defend himself from legal and media attacks outside of his official capacity, rather than being pressured by internal factions or the failure to execute an arrest warrant for Evo Morales.

Loma further alleged that Sokol had attempted to combat corruption and the illegal trading of positions within the institution, specifically targeting a group referred to as the ‘Golden Boys.’

In a related critique, lawyer Marco Borda has called for a structural reorganization of the Bolivian Police. Borda raised concerns regarding the management of traffic fine revenues and alleged irregular internal collection practices. He suggested that recent changes in police leadership have not addressed deep-seated issues, including accusations that money is exchanged for official appointments.
