Bolivian religious leaders call for unity amid economic and social crisis
Religious leaders and institutions in Bolivia are mobilizing to address social, economic, and spiritual challenges facing the country. Bishop Jorge Saldías of Tarija has called for national unity and dialogue among authorities and the population to combat a deep economic crisis characterized by unemployment and limited resources. He urged leaders to prioritize health and dignified work over political confrontation and criticized radical measures such as road blockades.
In a separate effort to promote social cohesion, the Bolivian Interreligious Dialogue has organized a meeting titled ‘Building a Culture of Peace’ at the Plurinational Legislative Assembly. The event brings together diverse faith communities, including Catholic, Evangelical, Jewish, Islamic, and Buddhist representatives, to foster coexistence and peace.
Additionally, the Bolivian Episcopal Conference and the Catholic University of Bolivia recently concluded a national meeting in Cochabamba focused on the ‘Culture of Care.’ This initiative aims to strengthen prevention protocols against abuse and promote safe environments within the Church. Meanwhile, during a meeting of pastoral vicars, Pbro. Juan José Orellana of La Paz encouraged clergy to support families facing illness and economic hardship through renewed faith and communal support.
