Bolivian Senator Nilton Condori suspended for eight months

Bolivian Senator Nilton Condori has been suspended from the Senate for eight months following a decision by the Ethics Commission. The sanction includes five months without pay.

Condori, a representative from La Paz, rose to prominence by criticizing legislative privileges and advocating for a 50% reduction in the salaries of deputies and senators. While some reports link the disciplinary action to his support for 53 days of national blockades, Condori maintains that the suspension is politically motivated. He argues the measures are a response to his efforts to oversee parliamentary brigades and his calls to eliminate life pensions for former presidents.

Condori has characterized the sanction as a “medal” rather than a gag, comparing his situation to the 2002 expulsion of Evo Morales. He stated that as an indigenous Aymara leader, he is being targeted for his rebellious stance. Although the suspension prevents him from participating in Senate sessions, he retains his status as a senator and his parliamentary immunity.
